Large-Scale Tree and Living Wall Installation at a Nonprofit Headquarters in McLean, VA
The Pedersen Foundation’s new headquarters in McLean, Virginia needed more than just beautiful interiors. It needed a signature feature that would reflect the Foundation’s values of growth, innovation, and long-term impact. The vision centered around a 14-foot Black Olive tree, placed on the second floor directly under a skylight.
The challenge? The tree had to be lifted through a second-story window measuring just 38 inches wide.
Interior Plantscapes was chosen for our proven expertise in custom plant design and complex interior plant installations across the Washington DC, Baltimore, and Northern Virginia areas. Our team developed a custom crane lift plan in collaboration with building engineers, crane operators, and millwork contractors. The installation was completed in one carefully timed operation with no disruption, no damage, and full protection of all interior finishes.
In addition to the tree, we designed and installed two large-scale living walls. The first, a curved wall measuring 11.67 feet wide by 9.67 feet high. The second, located in a glass-walled conference room, measured 8.42 feet wide by 9.67 feet high and was fully integrated with custom millwork. A total of 750 tropical plants were arranged in precise geometric patterns to complement the building’s clean architecture.
Today, the 14-foot tree stands as the centerpiece of the Foundation’s space, improving indoor air quality and enhancing the occupant experience. The plant installation continues to be serviced by our expert maintenance team, ensuring it stays vibrant, healthy, and aligned with the Foundation’s brand and mission.
